How to Stake TAO with Talisman

Published Updated Last verified: October 20268 min read
Short answer

Install Talisman, add a Bittensor account and send TAO to it on the Bittensor network. Then choose Stake on your TAO balance, pick Root Staking or Subnet DTAO, enter the amount, choose a validator, review and confirm. The browser extension and the mobile app both stake TAO. Keep a little TAO free for the network fee.

What you need to stake TAO with Talisman

You need Talisman on a supported browser or the mobile app, a Bittensor account, TAO on the Bittensor network and free balance for transaction fees. Talisman lists Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge for its extension. Its mobile app added TAO staking on 22 July 2026 and subnet staking on 1 September 2026 (extension documentation; mobile release notes).

Talisman’s Bittensor section explains that a new account is created as a Polkadot account because Bittensor is based on Substrate. If you already have an account, Talisman documents importing it with a recovery phrase or JSON file. Use the wallet’s own account flow and keep the recovery material private (create a Bittensor account; import a Bittensor account).

For a new transfer, open Receive, select the account, choose Bittensor and copy the address or QR code. Talisman warns that Substrate address formats are network-specific, so select the Bittensor network before you send (Talisman’s receive guide).

How to set up Talisman for Bittensor

Set up Talisman by adding a Bittensor account, enabling Bittensor in the network list and checking that the TAO asset appears.

  1. Install the extension from Talisman’s official download page, then open the wallet. On desktop, the documented path starts in the More menu.
  2. Choose Add Account. For a new wallet, select New Polkadot Account, name it and choose Create. For an existing wallet, choose Import and use the documented recovery phrase or JSON route.
  3. Open More, All Settings, Networks and Tokens and Manage networks. Under Polkadot, enable Bittensor if it is disabled (Talisman’s network guide).
  4. Select the account, open Receive, choose Bittensor and compare the address with the place sending your TAO. Wait for the balance to appear before opening the staking flow.

For the broader process, read our TAO staking guide and platform comparison.

How to stake TAO on Root in Talisman

Root staking keeps the position TAO-denominated. Bittensor describes Root as netuid 0 without a subnet pool swap, so there is no pool swap fee or pool price impact. The validator still matters (Bittensor’s staking guide; Bittensor’s pool guide).

  1. Choose the Bittensor account that holds your TAO.
  2. Hover over the TAO balance and choose Stake.
  3. Choose Root Staking as the staking type.
  4. Enter the amount and choose Review.
  5. Choose a validator from the validator pill, review the transaction and choose Confirm.

These labels come from Talisman’s Root guide. Read the amount and the network fee on the review screen before you confirm, and use our validator checklist to pick the validator.

Root rewards build up in the validator’s basket until you claim them. Talisman’s mobile app can claim them from your portfolio or bundle a claim into an unstake, and the extension added Root Reborn support in v3.8.0 (mobile notes; extension notes). Our claim guide covers every route.

How to stake TAO on a subnet in Talisman

Subnet staking swaps TAO for a subnet’s alpha token. Bittensor documents pool fees, price impact from your order and slippage from other transactions. Talisman shows a warning and offers MEV Shield in the confirmation flow (Bittensor’s pool mechanics; Talisman’s subnet guide).

  1. Choose the Bittensor account, hover over TAO and choose Stake.
  2. Choose Subnet DTAO as the staking type.
  3. Enter the amount, select the subnet and select a validator.
  4. Open the validator pill if you want to change the selected validator.
  5. Review the transaction, turn on MEV Shield when available, accept the subnet warning and choose Confirm.

Talisman says MEV Shield encrypts the operation to reduce the risk of front-running, and that the wallet caps slippage on every stake and unstake. It does not publish the cap, so check the amount you will receive on the review screen (MEV Shield documentation).

A subnet position follows the alpha token’s price as well as the validator’s performance, so what you get back can differ from the TAO you put in.

How to check or unstake a Talisman position

Talisman shows Root under the TAO asset and each subnet position as its own alpha token. Select the asset to view validator allocations (Talisman’s position guide).

  • Check Root. Open the TAO asset and select the Root position to see its staking details.
  • Check a subnet. Open the relevant alpha token. Talisman’s guide says the token is listed separately for each subnet and can contain multiple validator allocations.
  • Unstake. Use the current Unstake action on the relevant position, enter the amount, review the request and confirm it. On a subnet, keep MEV Shield and the wallet’s slippage protection in mind.
  • Change validator. Open the position’s three-dot menu, choose Change Validator, select the new validator, review and confirm (Talisman’s validator guide).

In the extension, v3.11.0 of 8 October 2026 sets the minimum stake at 0.02 TAO and stops a partial unstake from closing a small position. The mobile app stakes and unstakes TAO from the TAO page and alpha on any subnet (extension release notes; mobile release notes).

Plain Bittensor unstaking has no unbonding period, according to the chain guide. Subnet exits still swap alpha back to TAO and can be affected by pool fees, price impact and slippage. Read our TAO unstaking guide for the wider checklist before you approve an exit.

How to automate Talisman staking with Stakao

Stakao connects to Talisman through the browser extension on a computer. Its phone connections are Nova Wallet and SubWallet through WalletConnect; the Talisman mobile app is not on Stakao’s phone list. You can still stake by hand in Talisman mobile, as its release notes document, but that is a separate path from Stakao automation.

Stakao runs a strategy from your own Bittensor wallet through one staking-only permission. It can stake and unstake but cannot transfer TAO, never holds your keys and can be revoked from the wallet. Read the staking permission guide before you activate it.

Stakao needs at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free (not staked) for the first activation. The chain reserves a 0.126 TAO deposit while the permission exists, and at least 0.1 TAO should stay free afterwards for fees. See how Stakao works and pricing for the current product details.

The Free plan includes Auto Validators and Smart DCA, with validators picked automatically. Premium adds AI-picked subnets with a risk engine and a 7-day free trial. Stakao never takes a cut of staking rewards.

Staking and subnet tokens carry risk: rewards vary and subnet token prices can fall. This page is information, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stake TAO in the Talisman mobile app?

Yes. Talisman’s mobile release notes add TAO staking from the TAO token page on 22 July 2026 and subnet staking on 1 September 2026. The app can also claim pending Root rewards and shows each Root validator’s basket and your claimable TAO. To run a Stakao strategy with Talisman, use the browser extension on a computer.

What is the minimum to stake TAO in Talisman?

Talisman’s extension sets the minimum stake at 0.02 TAO since version 3.11.0 of 8 October 2026, above the chain default of 0.002 TAO per stake operation. Add the network fee on top, and leave some TAO free so the fee can be paid. The review screen shows what the wallet will accept.

Does Talisman charge a fee for staking TAO?

Talisman’s Bittensor guides do not publish a separate Talisman staking fee. Root staking has no pool swap fee, while subnet staking uses a pool and its fee and price movement. A Bittensor network fee still applies. Keep free TAO available, then review the current transaction details before you confirm the stake or unstake.

Can I use a Ledger with Talisman for TAO?

Yes. Talisman documents connecting a Bittensor Ledger account through the generic Polkadot app. The Ledger signs while Talisman presents the account and staking flow. Connect the account, compare the address, then read the request on the device before approving it. The separate Ledger guide covers the full hardware wallet path.

How do I unstake TAO in Talisman?

Open the Bittensor account, select the TAO Root position or the subnet alpha position, choose the current Unstake action, enter the amount and review it before confirming. Talisman’s current notes confirm partial unstaking, while its MEV Shield guide covers subnet stake and unstake protection. Plain Bittensor unstaking has no unbonding period, so TAO becomes spendable after settlement.
