How to Stake TAO with a Ledger

Short answer

Yes. You can stake TAO with a Ledger through Talisman or Nova Wallet while the private key stays on the device. Install the generic Polkadot app, connect the Ledger account, choose Root or a subnet, and approve the decoded transaction on the Ledger screen. Ledger Wallet installs the app; the compatible wallet presents the Bittensor staking flow.

Can you stake TAO with a Ledger?

Yes. A Ledger can sign TAO stake transactions through a compatible Bittensor wallet. Bittensor lists Ledger as cold storage supported through compatible wallets, and lists Talisman and Nova Wallet for managing and staking TAO (Bittensor wallet list).

The Ledger signs; it is not the staking interface. Ledger’s Bittensor guide sends you through Talisman: install Polkadot, connect the account and enable Bittensor. Bittensor says the device shows the decoded call and refuses blind signing (Bittensor signing guide).

Stakao uses one staking-only Bittensor proxy. Activating a strategy asks your wallet for one signature. If the account in Talisman, Nova Wallet or SubWallet is a Ledger account, the wallet sends the request to the device for you to read and approve. Stakao never holds your keys, the permission can stake and unstake but cannot transfer TAO, and you can revoke it. We have not tested every wallet and Ledger combination, so check that the request appears on the device before you rely on it. Read the staking permission guide before you connect it.

What you need for TAO staking with a Ledger

You need a Ledger device, the generic Polkadot app, a compatible wallet and enough free TAO for the stake and network fee. The table uses the device and wallet documentation checked today.

RequirementWhat the sources documentCheck
Ledger deviceNano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X, Flex or Stax (Learn Bittensor)Check current support before connecting
Ledger appPolkadot (DOT), the generic app (Bittensor)Use version 100.0.5 or later for btcli
WalletTalisman, Nova Wallet or another compatible wallet (Bittensor list)Enable the Bittensor network
Free balanceStake amount plus a Bittensor network fee (add-stake reference)Leave TAO free in the account

Learn Bittensor lists Ledger Live, the Polkadot app and these models, and names Talisman, Nova Wallet and SubWallet as compatible wallets. Ledger says the original Nano S is being phased out, so check current support (Ledger’s article).

Open Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, to install Polkadot. Close it before connecting to Talisman, then unlock the device and open Polkadot. The free balance must cover the stake and fee, so do not commit the whole transferable balance (add-stake reference).

If you plan to automate with Stakao, keep at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free (not staked) for the first activation. The chain reserves a 0.126 TAO deposit while the permission exists, and at least 0.1 TAO should stay free afterwards for fees. The Free plan costs nothing, and Premium has a 7-day free trial.

Stake in Talisman with your Ledger

Talisman documents the Ledger connection path and the Root and subnet choices, and our Talisman guide covers the same screens without a Ledger. Keep Ledger Wallet closed while you connect, and follow the Talisman Ledger setup with the device unlocked and the Polkadot app open.

  1. Connect the Ledger, unlock it and open the generic Polkadot app before opening Talisman (Learn Bittensor).
  2. Choose Add account, Connect, then Connect Ledger. Select Polkadot/Substrate, Bittensor and Polkadot App (Talisman’s documented steps).
  3. Select the account and continue. Compare Talisman’s address with the Ledger before a deposit or stake.
  4. If needed, open Settings, Networks & Tokens, Manage Networks and Polkadot. Enable Bittensor, tick CheckMetadataHash and choose Update Network, as documented in Ledger’s access guide.

For Root, choose the Bittensor account, hover over TAO and select Stake. Choose Root Staking, enter the amount, review and confirm. The Talisman Root guide documents these labels.

For a subnet, choose Stake, select Subnet DTAO, enter the amount, subnet and validator, review and confirm. Talisman adds a warning and notes the alpha-token price risk (Talisman’s subnet guide).

When the wallet asks for the signature, inspect the Ledger screen. Bittensor says Polkadot shows the pallet, call, destination and amount before approval. Talisman does not document the exact Ledger window, so reject any request you cannot reconcile with the staking details.

Stake in Nova Wallet with your Ledger

Nova Wallet supports Ledger on mobile. It lists Bluetooth for Nano X, Flex and Stax, and USB on Android for Nano X, Nano S Plus and Nano S (Nova’s device list).

  1. Install the latest Nova Wallet and Ledger firmware, close other Ledger apps, and enable Bluetooth on the phone and Ledger when using Bluetooth (Nova’s checklist).
  2. Choose Already have a wallet, Hardware wallet and Ledger (Generic Polkadot app). Continue, unlock the Ledger and open Polkadot (Nova’s Ledger setup).
  3. Select the device, compare pairing codes the first time, pair it, select the account and approve the operations shown on the Ledger. Nova says the addresses must match (Nova’s address check).

Nova’s TAO guide documents separate Root and subnet choices. Root keeps the position in TAO; subnet staking exposes it to the subnet token’s price. The guide does not document a Ledger-specific staking sequence, so this article does not invent button names (Nova’s TAO staking guide).

When Nova presents a TAO request, review the network, account, amount and validator in the app, then read the Ledger before approving. Nova’s generic guide documents selecting the asset, confirming and approving on the Ledger, but it is not a TAO staking walkthrough (Nova’s Ledger transaction guide).

Use btcli with a Ledger

Use btcli tx add-stake, then add --ledger so signing goes to the device. The add-stake reference defines --hotkey, --netuid and --amount-tao; the Ledger guide defines the Ledger signer.

btcli tx add-stake --hotkey HOTKEY_SS58 --netuid 0 --amount-tao 1 --dry-run
btcli tx add-stake --hotkey HOTKEY_SS58 --netuid 0 --amount-tao 1 --ledger
btcli tx add-stake --hotkey HOTKEY_SS58 --netuid 1 --amount-tao 1 --ledger

Replace HOTKEY_SS58 with the hotkey you back. Use netuid 0 for Root or the subnet’s netuid. The first command previews without submitting; the others submit after Ledger approval. Read the add-stake parameters and the Ledger signing flow before running a command.

The free balance must cover the stake plus the transaction fee, and subnet staking can use a price limit. The browser-extension alternative uses --signer extension with Talisman, Polkadot.js or SubWallet; --ledger keeps the signing request on the hardware device instead (extension signing guide).

Security checks on the Ledger device

Check the request on the device before approving it. Reject anything you cannot match to your intended action.

  • Use the generic app. Open Polkadot, not a legacy chain-specific app. Bittensor says it needs no blind-signing toggle and refuses calls it cannot display (Bittensor’s Ledger guide).
  • Match the details. Check the account, network, call, amount, destination and validator against the decoded request. Reject different addresses. Nova makes this check explicit (Nova’s documentation).
  • Protect the recovery phrase. Keep the 24-word phrase offline. Never type it into a website, chat or support form (Ledger’s support article).
  • Test the setup. For a new wallet connection, use a small test stake and check that the position appears in the wallet before committing more. This is a practical check, not a Ledger requirement.

Staking and subnet tokens carry risk: rewards vary and subnet token prices can fall. This page is information, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stake TAO in Ledger Wallet (Ledger Live)?

Ledger’s Bittensor guide tells you to use Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, to install the Polkadot app, then connect the device to Talisman. It does not document a TAO staking screen inside Ledger Wallet itself, so use a compatible wallet for the staking flow.

Which Ledger app do I need for Bittensor?

Install the generic Polkadot (DOT) app, rather than a legacy chain-specific app. Bittensor’s guide says the app must be version 100.0.5 or later and that the device refuses blind signing.

Can I use a Ledger with Nova Wallet for TAO?

Yes. Nova Wallet documents Ledger support on mobile, with Bluetooth for Nano X, Flex and Stax, plus USB support on Android for Nano X, Nano S Plus and Nano S. Nova documents Root and subnet staking for TAO, but its Ledger pages do not give a separate TAO staking screen sequence, so follow the current app and approve the request on the Ledger.

Can I use a Ledger with Stakao?

Stakao never holds your keys. If your Talisman, Nova Wallet or SubWallet account is a Ledger account, the wallet sends Stakao’s staking-only permission request to the device, where you read and approve it. The permission can stake and unstake but cannot transfer TAO, and you can revoke it from your wallet. We have not tested every wallet and Ledger combination, so check that the request appears on the device first.

Is staking TAO with a Ledger safer?

A Ledger keeps the private key on a separate device, and Bittensor says its generic Polkadot app decodes transactions and refuses blind signing. That reduces key exposure, but it does not remove phishing, wrong-address, recovery-phrase, device or market risk. Read every request on the device before approving it.

What happens if I lose my Ledger?

A lost Ledger is recoverable only if you still control the recovery phrase for the account. Ledger tells Nano S users to preserve and protect the 24-word phrase while support is phased out. Keep that phrase offline and never enter it into a website, chat or support form.
