How to Unstake TAO on Bittensor
Published Updated Last verified: October 20268 min read
Short answer
To unstake TAO, open your position in a wallet or in the Taostats app, choose Unstake or Sell, enter the amount and approve it. Bittensor has no unbonding period, so a plain unstake settles at once and the TAO is spendable straight away. From Root you get your TAO back one for one. From a subnet you sell the subnet’s alpha token through its pool, so what you receive depends on the pool price at that moment.
Unstaking from Root or from a subnet
Check which kind of position you hold first, because the two unstake differently. Talisman’s docs show Root under the TAO asset and each subnet position as its own alpha token, such as SN45 (Talisman docs). On Taostats and in btcli, Root is subnet 0.
| Position | Root (subnet 0) | A subnet |
|---|---|---|
| You hold | TAO | The subnet’s alpha token |
| Unstaking | Converts back to TAO one for one | Sells the alpha to the pool for TAO |
| Price | No price impact | The pool price decides what you get |
| Pool fee | None | A small percentage, set per subnet |
| Rewards | You get principal only: rewards you have not claimed stay owed to you | Already added to your alpha, so they sell with it |
On Root, claim your rewards with btcli root claim or a tool that supports Root claims. A claim has a network fee. Our rewards guide and Root staking guide go deeper.
Is there a waiting period to unstake TAO?
No. Bittensor has no unbonding period: plain unstaking settles immediately, and the TAO is spendable at once (Bittensor docs). The chain adds a block about every 12 seconds (Bittensor docs). Two things can still hold TAO back:
- Locked alpha. Locks are opt-in. If you locked alpha on a subnet, your staked alpha there must stay at or above the locked amount, so only the alpha above it can be unstaked (Taostats docs).
- A hold window on Root. The network can set one, through a setting called
RootStakeUnlockInterval. Root stake would then be locked for that many blocks after your last stake change, and a claim restarts the clock (Bittensor docs). It read 0 on the live chain on 13 October 2026, so no hold applies today.
If your TAO is staked on an exchange, its own terms apply: Kraken says flexible staking can be unstaked at any time (Kraken). Our guide to the best TAO staking platforms compares the options.
Unstaking fees, price impact and price limits
- Network fee. Every unstake pays a small fee in TAO from your free balance, so keep a little TAO free.
- Pool fee, subnets only. The default is about 0.05% of the amount, taken in alpha when you unstake. It is set per subnet and can change, so read it before a large sale. Root has no pool fee (Taostats docs).
- Price impact and slippage. Your own sale moves the pool. By Taostats’ formula, selling 10 alpha into a pool of 100 alpha and 100 TAO returns about 9.1% less than the price suggests, and a smaller pool costs more. Other trades landing first can add more.
Quote the sale first with btcli query quote-unstake. For a large amount, use a price limit: remove_stake_limit names the worst pool price you accept. With allow_partial it sells what fits within the limit and leaves the rest staked; without it, the whole sale fails once the limit would be passed. btcli applies a 5% tolerance by default and Taostats applies a limit, but a plain remove_stake call from another tool has none (Taostats docs). A limit protects a sale you submit now. It is not a stop-loss.
A partial unstake must leave a remainder worth at least 0.002 TAO, the chain’s default minimum. To leave nothing behind, unstake the whole position.
How to unstake TAO, step by step
Use the tool you already stake with. In every case the TAO lands in your free balance, in your own wallet.
Unstake TAO with Taostats
- Open Taostats, connect your wallet extension and go to the staking app, or to the subnet’s page.
- Press Sell next to your position.
- Enter the amount (Max uses all your available alpha) and check the estimated slippage. On a subnet page, Settings lets you change the validator and the slippage you accept.
- Click Next and confirm, then approve the request in your wallet app.
Taostats charges nothing for staking or unstaking (Taostats docs).
Unstake TAO in SubWallet
- Open SubWallet and go to Earning: the tab at the bottom of the extension, or the sidebar of the web dashboard.
- Select the subnet position you want to leave and choose Unstake.
- Enter the amount and the validator, then choose Unstake again. The web dashboard blocks the sale if the slippage is above 0.5% until you raise your tolerance.
- Check the details and choose Approve. SubWallet says the TAO arrives right away.
Unstake TAO in Talisman
Talisman’s release notes say version 3.11.0 (8 October 2026) lists Root and subnet stake in the Earn tab, and that earlier versions added unstake buttons to the wallet (Talisman release notes). Talisman publishes no step-by-step unstake page, so read the amount and the preview on the confirmation screen before you approve. Its MEV Shield guide says Talisman caps the slippage of every stake and unstake, and offers a shield option that encrypts the operation to reduce front-running.
Unstake TAO in Nova Wallet
Bittensor lists Nova Wallet as a mobile wallet for TAO and staking (Bittensor wallet list), but we found no official Nova page on unstaking TAO, so we give no steps. The closest documented route is Taostats, which names the Nova browser as a popular way to connect on mobile (Taostats docs).
Unstake TAO with btcli
Quote the sale, preview it, then send it. Use your subnet number for --netuid and your validator’s hotkey address in place of VALIDATOR.
btcli query quote-unstake --netuid 1 --amount-alpha 50 --json
btcli tx remove-stake --hotkey VALIDATOR --netuid 1 --amount-alpha all --dry-run
btcli tx remove-stake --hotkey VALIDATOR --netuid 1 --amount-alpha all -w my_coldkey--dry-run previews the fee without sending anything. For Root, run btcli stake remove --netuid 0 --hotkey VALIDATOR --amount all --claim, which claims the rewards owed on that validator, then unstakes. Add --signer extension to sign in Talisman, Polkadot.js or SubWallet, or --ledger to sign on a Ledger (Bittensor docs).
btcli stake unstake-all --hotkey VALIDATOR --dry-run sweeps every position of one validator, Root included, into free TAO. It has no price limit and can skip positions without a warning, such as a subnet with trading disabled, so check what is left afterwards.
How to unstake TAO with Stakao
If a Stakao strategy holds your positions, deactivate the strategy instead of unstaking by hand. Choose Deactivate in your dashboard, connect the wallet that owns the strategy and confirm. Stakao unstakes your positions in about a minute, a little longer with several, with no action from you. Your wallet then asks for one signature that removes the staking permission, and its 0.126 TAO deposit returns to your free balance. A position too small to unstake can be skipped and stays in your wallet. The withdraw and deactivate guide covers each screen.
You can also remove the permission from your wallet, and it takes effect at once. Your stake stays in your wallet, but Stakao can no longer sell for you, so a stop-loss cannot act on positions you still hold. Deactivating does not cancel your plan: manage it under Account, then Subscription. See the staking permission guide.
Before a first activation, a strategy needs 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free: the chain reserves a 0.126 TAO deposit for the permission, and the rest pays network fees. If all your TAO is staked, unstake a small amount first, since only free TAO pays the deposit and the fees. Take it from Root if you hold any: a Root unstake has no pool fee and no price impact. After that, keep at least 0.1 TAO free for fees. See how Stakao works and compare the strategies.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to unstake TAO?
There is no waiting period. Bittensor has no unbonding period, so a plain unstake settles once the chain confirms it, and the TAO is spendable at once. Only alpha you chose to lock is held back, and Root stake can have a hold window if the network sets one. It reads zero today.
Is there a fee to unstake TAO?
Yes, a small network fee in TAO from your free balance. Unstaking from a subnet also pays a pool fee, 0.05% by default, set per subnet and taken in alpha. Root has no pool fee. Stakao and Taostats add no fee of their own.
Can I unstake alpha tokens for TAO?
Yes. Unstaking a subnet position sells its alpha token back to TAO through the subnet’s pool at the pool price, so you can receive more or less than you put in. For a large amount, quote the sale first and use a price limit.
How do I unstake TAO in Talisman, SubWallet or Nova Wallet?
In SubWallet, open Earning, select the subnet position, choose Unstake, enter the amount and validator, then approve. Talisman shows Root and subnet stake in the wallet but publishes no step-by-step unstake page. We found no official Nova Wallet page for TAO unstaking, so this guide gives no Nova steps.
How do I unstake TAO if I use Stakao?
Choose Deactivate on the strategy in your dashboard. Stakao unstakes your positions, then your wallet asks for one signature that removes the staking permission and returns the 0.126 TAO deposit to your free balance. You can also remove the permission from your wallet, but Stakao can then no longer sell for you.
