How to Check and Claim Your TAO Staking Rewards
Subnet rewards need no claim: Bittensor adds them to your alpha position every tempo, and they become TAO when you unstake. Root rewards build up in your validator’s basket and reach your stake only when you claim them. Check what you are owed on Taostats or with btcli, then claim on Taostats, in Nova Wallet or Talisman’s app, or with btcli root claim once the amount is clearly above the fee.
Where your TAO staking rewards are held
Root and subnet rewards are held differently. Root dividends stay as subnet alpha in the Root validator’s basket until you claim them, while subnet rewards are added to the alpha position. The current Bittensor Root Reborn guide describes the basket model and the manual claim.
| Where you stake | What accrues | Do you claim? |
|---|---|---|
| Root, netuid 0 | Dividends in the validator’s subnet alpha basket | Yes, manual Root claim |
| A subnet | Subnet alpha added to your position | No separate claim, unstake to realise TAO |
Taostats says subnet emission is awarded every 360 blocks, about every 72 minutes. Bittensor’s docs add that this is the default tempo and that a subnet owner can set a longer one. Read the rewards and APY guide, how to stake TAO or the platform comparison for context.
How to check your TAO staking rewards
Check the same wallet address in a chain explorer, a wallet view and the Bittensor CLI, then compare the staked and accrued values before you claim.
| Label | What it means | Spendable now? |
|---|---|---|
| Staked | Root principal on netuid 0 | No, it is still staked |
| Accrued | Root rewards valued at current pool prices | No, claim it first |
| Free | TAO already in the wallet balance | Yes, subject to the fee and wallet rules |
- Start with Taostats. Open the Root Claim page and connect your wallet to see each validator’s basket and what you can claim.
- Check your wallet. Nova Wallet lists positions and rewards on its Your Bittensor screen (Nova’s guide), and Talisman’s mobile app shows each Root validator’s basket and your claimable TAO (Talisman’s release notes). Watch-only accounts show positions but cannot sign.
- Use btcli for a per-validator view. The official guide documents
btcli stake list, btcli wallet overviewandbtcli root list --mine. Look for the Root principal under staked and the basket yield under accrued. That accrued figure is a live quote, not free TAO.
If two views disagree, check that they show the same address, account and network.
How to claim Root staking rewards
A Root claim sells your share of the selected validator’s basket at the current pool value and stakes the resulting TAO back on Root with that same validator. It does not touch your principal. The claim-root-with-hotkey reference documents the single-validator call.
On Taostats:
- Open the Root Claim page and connect the wallet that holds the Root stake.
- Choose Claim on one validator, or Claim All. A validator below the dust threshold keeps accruing until it clears.
- Check the amount, keep free TAO for the fee and approve the request in your wallet. The claimed TAO is staked on Root for your account, not returned as free balance.
In a wallet: Nova Wallet claims Root rewards manually in the app and adds them to your Root stake (Nova’s guide). Talisman’s mobile app can claim pending Root rewards from your portfolio, or bundle a claim into an unstake (v1.0.8 release notes).
With btcli: replace HOTKEY_SS58 with your validator’s hotkey, preview, then claim.
btcli root claim --dry-run --hotkey HOTKEY_SS58
btcli root claim --hotkey HOTKEY_SS58The dry run shows the fee next to what you are owed and warns when a claim would lose money. Without --hotkey, btcli asks you to pick the wallet and the validator. A claim always settles the validator’s whole entitlement: there is no partial claim.
When leaving Root, use the claim-then-unstake route below only when RootStakeUnlockInterval is zero:
btcli stake remove --netuid 0 --hotkey HOTKEY_SS58 --amount all --claimThe remove-stake reference says --claim redeems the whole validator basket before unstaking, even for a partial principal exit. If the hold interval is nonzero, claim first, wait, then unstake separately.
When to claim Root rewards
Claim when what you are owed is clearly above the fee and your free TAO covers the amount the chain reserves for it.
| Check | What the chain does | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Threshold | Skips small payouts, which keep accruing | Check the live threshold |
| Fee | Grows with the basket’s holdings | Compare it in the dry run |
| Scope | A hotkey claim touches one validator | Claim one validator at a time |
| Hold window | A claim can restart it | Wait before you unstake |
The official Root claim threshold reference says the default threshold is 500,000 rao (0.0005 TAO), but the chain can set the live value. The fee grows with the basket’s holdings: Bittensor puts it around 0.057 TAO for a full basket of 128 holdings, and lower for a smaller one (Root Reborn). Read the Root and fees guide and the Root staking guide for the mechanics.
Why TAO staking rewards are not showing or a claim failed
Most missing rewards are a difference between Root accrued value and subnet alpha, or a claim that is not yet eligible. Check these causes in order:
- You staked on a subnet. The reward is alpha added to the position each tempo, not free TAO waiting in a claim screen. It becomes TAO when you unstake. Taostats’ dTAO guide describes this destination.
- Root has not accrued a dividend yet. A new Root position can show principal without an accrued amount. Check
btcli stake listandbtcli root list --minefor the validator-specific view. - The payout is below threshold. The chain leaves it accruing until the live per-validator threshold is cleared. Query the threshold instead of repeating a transaction that will be skipped.
- The account is wrong or watch-only. Compare the selected address with the address that holds the stake. Nova documents that watch-only accounts can show positions and rewards but cannot sign.
- Free TAO cannot cover the fee. Run the dry run and leave enough free TAO for the reserved amount. The Bittensor claim reference says the preview refuses when the free balance cannot cover that reserve.
- A hold window is active. If the network sets a nonzero
RootStakeUnlockInterval, a claim restarts it, so wait it out before a separate unstake. Read how to unstake TAO for the exit sequence.
Nova Wallet and Talisman’s app document Root claims. SubWallet’s documentation covers staking but not a Root claim, so use Taostats or btcli when your wallet lacks the action.
Let Stakao claim Root rewards for you
If a Stakao strategy keeps TAO on Root, Stakao claims those rewards through the staking-only permission you signed, only when the amount owed is worth the network fee. You do not submit the claim by hand. Stakao never holds your keys; the permission can stake and unstake, cannot transfer TAO and can be revoked from your wallet. Read the staking permission guide before connecting it.
The Free plan includes Auto Validators and Smart DCA, with validators picked automatically. On Premium, AI-picked subnets work with a risk engine, and the free trial lasts 7 days. See Auto Validators, how Stakao works and the plans.
Stakao needs at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free (not staked) for the first activation. The chain reserves 0.126 TAO while the permission exists, and at least 0.1 TAO should stay free afterwards for fees. Stakao never takes a cut of staking rewards.
Staking and subnet tokens carry risk: rewards vary and subnet token prices can fall. This page is information, not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Do subnet staking rewards need to be claimed?
No. Bittensor adds subnet rewards in the subnet’s alpha token to your staked position each tempo. Taostats describes emission as awarded every 360 blocks, about 72 minutes, while the tempo can vary by subnet. You realise that position as TAO when you unstake, so there is no separate Root-style claim.
How often should I claim Root rewards?
There is no universal interval. Check the accrued amount and the fee first. Bittensor’s dry run compares the spent fee with accrued yield and warns when a claim would lose money. Claiming less often can reduce fee drag, but the basket value changes with pool prices and the chain may skip a payout below its threshold.
Why are my TAO staking rewards not showing?
First identify Root versus a subnet and the exact account. Subnet rewards stay in alpha and increase the position, not your free TAO balance. Root rewards appear as accrued basket yield and remain unclaimed until a manual claim. A new position may have no dividends yet, or a small payout may sit below the current threshold.
Do I lose unclaimed rewards if I unstake or change validator?
No. Bittensor says a Root unstake returns your principal while the rewards you are owed stay on that validator, with no deadline. Moving to another validator leaves them on the old one too, so you can claim them later. If the network sets a hold window, claim first, wait it out, then unstake separately.
Is claiming TAO rewards a taxable event?
It depends on your country, your tax rules, and how those rules classify staking rewards and a conversion from basket assets to TAO. Keep wallet addresses, transaction dates, amounts, fees, prices, and validator details. Use records to support your filing, and ask a qualified local adviser when the treatment is unclear.
