Short answer
Pick the platform that matches who should hold your keys. Stakao keeps your TAO in your wallet and does the work: AI-picked subnets, a stop-loss and a profit lock on every Premium position, and a free plan. Kraken is the simplest exchange route, but Kraken holds your TAO and its rate is up to about 5% to 7% a year depending on region, paid weekly (October 2026). Wallets and the command line give full control and no automation. Coinbase does not support TAO staking. Start free →

Stakao: automated staking from your own wallet
Stakao automates Bittensor staking while your TAO stays in your wallet. On the free plan, Auto Validators keeps your stake with strong validators on the subnets you pick, and Smart DCA enters your subnets step by step on a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule. On Premium, an AI agent, a quant score, a market-cap rule or a theme suggests the subnets, and a risk engine decides what to buy, how much and when to sell. Every Premium position gets a stop-loss and a profit lock.
Pros
- +Your TAO stays in your wallet: a staking-only permission you can revoke at any time
- +A free plan with Auto Validators and Smart DCA
- +Premium: a stop-loss and a profit lock on every position, watched around the clock
- +Flat price, no cut of your rewards
- +TAO that is not in a position stays on Root, earning staking rewards
Cons
- -Needs at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with at least 0.1 TAO free for fees
- -One-time setup: connect a wallet and sign the staking permission (the chain reserves a 0.126 TAO deposit while the permission exists)
- -A stop-loss limits losses but cannot remove them: in a thin market, a sale can fill below the stop price.
- -The free strategies (Auto Validators and Smart DCA) do not use the risk engine, so they have no stop-loss
Best for: TAO holders who want automation, with their TAO kept in their own wallet.
Start freeKraken: the simplest exchange route
Kraken offers TAO staking inside your exchange account. Its pages show rates of up to about 5% to 7% a year depending on region, paid weekly (October 2026). Kraken holds your TAO, so there is no wallet to set up.
Pros
- +No wallet or permission to set up
- +Rewards paid weekly
- +No minimums, according to Kraken
- +Kraken says flexible staking can be unstaked at any time
Cons
- -Custodial: Kraken holds your TAO
- -The rate shown is an estimate before Kraken’s commission
- -Flexible staking pays rewards on up to 50% of the assets you choose to stake
- -Geographic restrictions apply
Best for: People who already keep TAO on Kraken and want the simplest flow.
Mentat Minds: automated market-cap indexes
Mentat Minds is another service that stakes for you through a Bittensor staking proxy, so your TAO stays in your wallet. Its One-Click Strategies and Mentat+ follow market-cap indexes such as Mentat 5 and Mentat 15, and Mentat+ also lets you build a custom mix of indexes and subnets. Mentat’s FAQ states a standard 9% staking fee on the rewards you earn and a minimum of 0.5 TAO for One-Click Strategies (October 2026).
Pros
- +Non-custodial proxy; Mentat’s docs say there is no lock-up
- +A lower entry minimum than Stakao for One-Click Strategies
- +Ready-made market-cap indexes, plus custom indexes in Mentat+
- +Mentat+ can invest directly or spread entries over one week, two weeks or a month
Cons
- -Mentat keeps 9% of the rewards you earn
- -The docs we read describe index rules, not a stop-loss on each position
- -Mentat+ minimums depend on what you pick: check Mentat’s docs
Best for: Holders who want ready-made market-cap indexes and accept a percentage fee.
Talisman, Nova Wallet and other wallets: stake it yourself
Bittensor’s own wallet list names several wallets that support TAO staking: Talisman (open-source, self-custodial, multi-chain), Nova Wallet (mobile), SubWallet (mobile and browser), Crucible Wallet (a Chrome extension with Ledger support) and the Taostats Wallet, among others. You stake from the wallet’s staking screen: choose Root or a subnet, choose a validator and confirm.
Pros
- +You keep your keys
- +You choose Root or a subnet, and the validator
- +Hardware wallets such as Ledger work through compatible wallets
Cons
- -You choose validators and watch subnet prices yourself
- -You sign every transaction and pay the network fees
- -No stop-loss: you decide when to sell
Best for: Hands-on holders who want to choose everything themselves.
Bittensor CLI (btcli): full control from the terminal
The official Bittensor command-line tool, btcli, covers staking, unstaking, moving stake between validators and checking your positions. It gives you full control and no interface to help you.
Pros
- +The official tool, with every staking operation
- +Scriptable if you want your own routines
- +Works with your own wallet
Cons
- -Command line only
- -No dashboard or alerts: you build your own
- -A wrong hotkey or amount is easy to type
Best for: Developers and experienced users who are comfortable in a terminal.
Taostats: data first, with staking tools
Taostats describes itself as the official Bittensor block explorer since 2022, with tools for staking, portfolio tracking, tax reports, subnet discovery and validator analytics. Its docs explain how Root and subnet staking differ.
Pros
- +Deep validator and subnet data
- +Staking tools and a wallet in one place
- +Clear docs on Root and subnet staking
Cons
- -You choose subnets and validators yourself
- -No stop-loss or automation
- -Staking is one feature among many
Best for: Holders who want data next to their manual staking.
Names you will see
Coinbase, Tensorplex stTAO and the Grayscale TAO ETF
Three names come up in searches for TAO staking. None of them is a way to stake TAO from your own wallet today.
Coinbase
TAO trading, no TAO stakingCoinbase lists TAO for trading, but its own Bittensor page says TAO staking is not supported. If you buy TAO on Coinbase, you need to move it to a wallet or another service to stake it.
Tensorplex stTAO
Wound downTensorplex offered liquid staking through stTAO and a bridge (tTAO). Tensorplex says Stake and the bridge have entered a deprecation phase: no new deposits, staking actions or bridge transfers, and remaining balances are withdrawn through a manual, batched process.
Grayscale GTAO
ETF filingGrayscale filed a Form S-1 for a Bittensor trust on 30 December 2025. Amendment No. 1, filed on 2 April 2026, proposes an NYSE Arca listing under the ticker GTAO. An ETF gives you price exposure to TAO through a broker account, not staking from your own wallet. Check EDGAR for the filing’s current status: this page does not claim it is approved or trading.
Validators
How to pick the best TAO staking validator
A validator keeps a share of the rewards, called its take, and passes the rest on to the people who stake with it. The chain default is 18%, and a validator can set a lower take at any time. Rewards, fees and risks differ between validators, so compare a few before you stake.
- Take: a lower take leaves more of the rewards with you, all else equal.
- Track record: how long the validator has run, and what its stakers have earned recently.
- Where you stake: Root and each subnet have their own validators, and Root has its own ranking.
If you would rather not choose, Stakao picks validators for you: validators with strong recent delegator yield, among established validators. Read how in how Stakao works, or see Bittensor’s own guide to picking a validator.
Wallets
Best wallet for staking TAO
The best wallet is one that supports Bittensor staking and that you can keep safe. Bittensor’s wallet list describes these options in its own words. Stakao connects with Talisman, SubWallet, Nova Wallet and Polkadot.js.
- Talisman: Open-source, self-custodial, multi-chain wallet that supports Bittensor.
- Nova Wallet: Mobile wallet for managing TAO, staking and everyday transactions.
- SubWallet: Flexible wallet for managing TAO on mobile and in the browser, for staking and transfers.
- Crucible Wallet: Chrome extension wallet for Bittensor, with staking tools and Ledger support.
- Ledger: Hardware wallet for secure TAO storage, supported through compatible Bittensor wallets.

How to choose
How to choose the right TAO staking platform
1. Custody
Who holds your keys? In your own wallet you control the TAO and carry the security work. On an exchange, the exchange holds it and carries that work, with its own risks: freezes, withdrawal limits and insolvency.
2. Automation
Subnet token prices move all the time, so a subnet that pays well this week can look different next week. Wallets and the command line leave the watching to you. Automated services do it for you. Stakao’s Premium strategies also size each position and protect it with a stop-loss and a profit lock. A stop-loss limits losses but cannot remove them: in a thin market, a sale can fill below the stop price.
3. Rates and fees
Look past the headline rate. On a subnet, your result depends on the reward rate and on the subnet token’s price. Then add the fees: the validator’s take, the service’s fee (a share of rewards at Mentat Minds and Kraken, a flat price at Stakao) and the Bittensor network fee.
4. Minimums and ease of use
Minimums run from 0.002 TAO per stake operation by default on the chain to 2 TAO for Stakao. If you do not want to learn wallets or the command line, choose an exchange or an automated service.

FAQ
TAO staking platforms: frequently asked questions
What is the best platform to stake TAO in 2026?
There is no single best platform: it depends on who holds your keys and how much work you want to do yourself. Stakao suits holders who want automation with their TAO kept in their own wallet. Kraken suits holders who prefer a simple exchange account and accept that Kraken holds their TAO. Wallets such as Talisman and Nova Wallet, or the Bittensor command line, suit people who want to choose everything themselves. Mentat Minds is another automated service, built on market-cap indexes. Check each provider’s current terms before you stake.
Can I stake TAO without giving up custody of my funds?
Yes. Stakao is non-custodial. You sign a staking-only permission: Stakao can stake and unstake for you but can never transfer your TAO, and you can revoke access at any time. Wallets such as Talisman and Nova Wallet, and the Bittensor command line, also keep your TAO in your own wallet. Exchange staking is custodial: the exchange holds your TAO.
Which TAO staking platform has the highest APY?
No platform can promise a rate, and the headline number is only part of the story. Kraken shows up to about 5% to 7% a year depending on region, paid weekly (October 2026), before its commission. Staking Rewards shows about 5% a year (5.04% on 13 October 2026). Rewards on a subnet are paid in that subnet’s token, so the token’s price changes what you end up with. Compare dated, sourced figures after fees instead of the biggest number.
Is TAO staking safe?
Staking carries risk on every platform. On an exchange you rely on the exchange to hold and return your TAO. In your own wallet you rely on your own security and on the permissions you approve. On a subnet, a fall in the subnet token’s price means fewer TAO when you exit. A stop-loss limits losses but cannot remove them: in a thin market, a sale can fill below the stop price. Only stake what you can afford to hold through a drop.
What is the difference between exchange staking and automated staking for TAO?
On an exchange such as Kraken you hand over your TAO and the exchange stakes it for you. With automated staking such as Stakao, your TAO stays in your wallet and a staking-only permission lets the service stake and unstake for you. Automation saves you time; it does not promise higher rewards. On Premium, every position also gets a stop-loss and a profit lock.
Can I stake TAO on Coinbase?
No. Coinbase’s own Bittensor page says TAO staking is not supported: you can trade TAO there, but not stake it. To earn staking rewards, send your TAO to your own Bittensor wallet and stake it there, use Kraken’s staking, or use an automated service such as Stakao.
How long does it take to start earning TAO staking rewards?
It depends on where you stake. On a subnet, Taostats says subnet emission is awarded every 360 blocks, about every 72 minutes. On Root, rewards build up and you claim them yourself. Kraken pays staking rewards weekly. Check your provider’s documentation for the exact rules before you rely on a dashboard number.
Is there a minimum amount of TAO needed to stake?
It depends on the route. The Bittensor chain asks for 0.002 TAO per stake operation by default. Stakao needs at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with at least 0.1 TAO free for fees. Mentat Minds lists 0.5 TAO for One-Click Strategies. Kraken advertises no minimums. Minimums change, so check the provider before you move funds.
What happened to Tensorplex stTAO, the TAO liquid staking token?
Tensorplex has wound down Tensorplex Stake and its tTAO bridge. Its deprecation notice says there should be no new deposits, staking actions or bridge transfers, and that remaining balances are withdrawn through a manual process in batches. If you still hold stTAO or tTAO, follow the steps in the Tensorplex notice.
Is there a TAO ETF?
Grayscale has filed to list one. It filed a Form S-1 for a Bittensor trust on 30 December 2025 and an Amendment No. 1 on 2 April 2026, which proposes an NYSE Arca listing under the ticker GTAO. An ETF gives you exposure to TAO’s price through a broker account, not staking from your own wallet. Check the SEC’s EDGAR database for the filing’s current status: this page does not claim it is approved or trading.
