Your options

Adding TAO, switching strategy and stopping are three different actions. Pick the one you want.

There is no pause button. Deactivating ends the strategy, and you can activate a strategy again whenever you want.

  • Add more TAO: do nothing. A running strategy picks up new TAO on its own, so you do not need to deactivate.
  • Switch between Premium strategies: choose Modify in your dashboard.
  • Stop and get your TAO back: choose Deactivate. This unstakes your positions, removes the staking permission and stops the automation.
  • Only remove the permission: you can do it from your wallet at any time.
  • Your dashboard shows the strategy as inactive while the permission is still in place: choose Revoke Proxy. It runs the same steps as Deactivate and removes the permission.

How to unstake TAO and deactivate a strategy

Deactivating takes a few minutes and ends with one signature in your wallet.

  1. Open your dashboard and select the wallet that owns the strategy.
  2. Choose Deactivate. Stakao opens the deactivation page for that strategy.
  3. Connect the wallet that owns the strategy. If you connect another wallet, Stakao asks you to connect the correct one.
  4. Read the summary. Deactivating unstakes your TAO, removes the staking permission and stops automated staking.
  5. Choose Confirm & Deactivate.
  6. Wait while Stakao unstakes your positions. This takes about a minute, a little longer if you have several positions, and it needs no action from you.
  7. Approve the signature request in your wallet. It removes the Stakao permission in one transaction.
  8. Wait for the chain to confirm. Do not refresh or close the page until you see the success message.

What you get back

Your TAO returns to your free balance, in your own wallet.

Once the strategy is deactivated, Stakao no longer has any access to your wallet. The 0.126 TAO chain deposit is released and returns to your free balance. Check your wallet for the exact amount.

The Bittensor documentation says plain unstaking has no unbonding period, so the TAO is yours to spend as soon as the unstake is confirmed.

Unstaking from a subnet is a swap against that subnet’s pool, so the amount you receive depends on the price of the subnet token at that moment.

Very small positions can be too small to unstake and may be skipped. They stay staked in your wallet, where you can unstake them yourself later.

If something stops halfway

Your TAO is always in your own wallet, so a stopped deactivation never leaves it with Stakao.

  • Another operation is in progress: Stakao is processing another on-chain operation and did not start the deactivation. Wait a moment, then choose Try Again.
  • Temporarily unavailable: Stakao could not check whether another operation is active, and did not start anything. Wait a moment, then choose Try Again.
  • We are checking your unstake: Stakao is confirming the result of an unstake. Wait, then choose Try Again. The message on screen says what Stakao is waiting for.
  • Transaction Cancelled: you closed or declined the request in your wallet. Choose Try Again when you are ready.
  • If the permission was already removed in an earlier attempt, Stakao only has to close the strategy, and you do not sign a second time.

What to check afterwards

A quick look confirms that everything is closed.

  • Your free balance has gone up by the unstaked TAO and the released chain deposit. Your wallet app shows the exact amounts.
  • If your wallet lists proxies, the Stakao proxy is gone from the list.
  • Your subscription is separate. Deactivating a strategy does not cancel your plan. Manage it under Account, then Subscription.
