TAO ETF vs Staking TAO in Your Own Wallet
Published Oct 13, 2026 · Last verified: October 2026 · Stakao · 8 min read
Short answer
As of 13 October 2026 we found no SEC approval or exchange listing of a TAO ETF, so check EDGAR for the current status. Grayscale has filed to turn its Bittensor Trust into one and Bitwise has filed for a TAO strategy fund, but a filing is not an approval. An ETF would give you exposure to the price of TAO through a brokerage account, and Grayscale says its trust cannot stake today. Staking TAO in your own wallet earns network rewards, can include subnet tokens and keeps the keys with you.
Is there a TAO ETF yet?
Not that we found. Two issuers have filed, and a filing is a request. Grayscale’s latest document is a preliminary prospectus marked “subject to completion”, and it says the shares being registered cannot be sold until the registration is effective (S-1/A).
| Issuer | What it filed | Where it stands on 13 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Grayscale Bittensor Trust (TAO) | An S-1 on 30 December 2025 and Amendment No. 1 on 2 April 2026, which proposes a NYSE Arca listing as GTAO and a new name, Grayscale Bittensor Trust ETF | Marked “subject to completion”. Shares are quoted on OTCQX and have traded there since 12 December 2025 |
| Bitwise TAO Strategy ETF | Form 485APOS on 30 December 2025, for a fund that can hold up to 60% of its assets directly in TAO and at least 40% in other exchange-traded products tied to TAO | The latest delay notice we found (Form 485BXT, 25 September 2026) moves the effective date to 25 October 2026 |
A delay notice moves a date. It is not an approval or a launch, and we cannot say whether or when either product will list. To check, open the EDGAR pages for Grayscale Bittensor Trust and Bitwise Funds Trust and look for a notice of effectiveness, a final prospectus (form 424B) and an exchange registration (form 8-A12B).
TAO ETF vs staking, side by side
No product has launched, so the ETF column describes the filings. The wallet column describes what you can do today.
| Topic | TAO ETF, as filed | Staking in your own wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | The price of TAO. Bitwise’s fund also holds other TAO-linked products | TAO itself, and subnet tokens if you choose them |
| Custody | A custodian holds the TAO for the fund | You hold the keys |
| Rewards | None at Grayscale’s trust today, which cannot stake | Network staking rewards, which vary and are not promised |
| Fees | A sponsor fee (2.5% a year at Grayscale’s trust) plus brokerage costs | Network fees, a swap fee on subnet tokens and the validator’s take |
| Access | A brokerage account, during exchange hours once listed | A Bittensor wallet, at any hour |
| Price vs value | Shares can trade above or below the TAO behind them | You hold the TAO, so there is no premium |
Exchanges are a third route. Coinbase’s own Bittensor page says staking is not supported there, while Kraken lists TAO staking with rates that vary by region (see Stakao vs Kraken). StakingRewards showed a TAO reward rate of 5.04% on 13 October 2026. Rates change, and no rate is promised.
What the Grayscale filing says
Six points from the filings matter most to someone choosing between the two routes:
- Staking. None of the trust, its sponsor, its custodian or anyone associated with it may stake the trust’s TAO, and there is no assurance this will ever be permitted (S-1/A).
- Redemptions. The trust is not accepting redemption requests (S-1/A), and it ran no redemption program at 30 June 2026 (10-Q).
- Premium. The shares have traded at a premium to the TAO they represent, at times a substantial one (S-1/A).
- Fee. The sponsor fee is 2.5% a year, paid in TAO, so the TAO behind each share shrinks a little over time (10-Q, quarter ended 30 June 2026). Check the final prospectus for the fee at launch.
- Custody. BitGo is the primary custodian, and Coinbase was added as an additional custodian for part of the TAO (8-K, filed 5 October 2026).
- Rules. The trust is not a registered investment company under the 1940 Act, so shareholders lack the protections that come with one (S-1/A). Bitwise’s fund is a 1940 Act fund, and its fees are blank in the 30 December 2025 draft.
Risks on each side
- ETF or trust. The price risk of TAO, a premium or discount to the TAO behind the shares, sponsor and custodian risk, and no staking income at Grayscale’s trust.
- Your own wallet. The price risk of TAO and of any subnet token, thin pools (see stop-loss for subnet tokens), and self-custody: if you lose your seed phrase, nobody can recover your TAO.

Where Stakao fits
Staking yourself means choosing validators and subnets and watching positions. Stakao automates that while your TAO stays in your wallet. It works through a staking-only permission, cannot transfer your TAO, and you can revoke it at any time. Our guides to staking TAO and the best TAO staking platforms cover the basics, and root staking skips the pool swap.
On the free plan, Auto Validators keeps your stake with strong validators on the subnets you choose, and Smart DCA enters step by step on a schedule. Premium (€19 per month or €168 per year, with a 7-day free trial) adds eight engine strategies. The AI agent, the quant score or the basket rule only suggests subnets. It cannot buy, sell or touch your keys. A rules-based risk engine decides what to buy, how much and when to sell. The same rules apply to every wallet. Every position gets a stop-loss that adapts to the subnet’s volatility and only ever moves up. As a position gains, its stop rises to lock in part of the gain. A stop-loss limits losses but cannot remove them: in a thin market, a sale can fill below the stop price.
Auto Validators and Smart DCA do not use the risk engine. You need 2 TAO in your wallet to activate a strategy, with at least 0.1 TAO free for fees. See how it works, compare all strategies and check the pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a TAO ETF?
Not that we found. As of 13 October 2026 we found no SEC approval or exchange listing of a TAO ETF. Grayscale has filed to turn its Bittensor Trust into one, and Bitwise has filed for a TAO strategy fund. Check EDGAR for the current status.
Can a TAO ETF stake your TAO?
Grayscale’s filing says nobody associated with its trust may stake the trust’s TAO today, and that there is no assurance this will ever be permitted. A shareholder therefore earns no staking rewards through the trust. Staking in your own wallet earns network rewards, which vary and are not promised.
What does Grayscale’s Bittensor trust charge?
Its 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 shows a sponsor fee of 2.5% a year, paid in TAO. Check the final prospectus for the fee at launch. Staking in your own wallet has no fund fee, but it has network fees, a swap fee of about 0.05% on subnet tokens and the validator’s take. Stakao charges a flat plan price and never takes a cut of your rewards.
How do I check whether a TAO ETF has launched?
Open the EDGAR pages for Grayscale Bittensor Trust and Bitwise Funds Trust. Look for a notice of effectiveness, a final prospectus (form 424B) and an exchange registration (form 8-A12B), then confirm the listing on the exchange’s own site.
Does Stakao hold my TAO?
No. Stakao is non-custodial. Everything runs through a staking-only permission. Stakao cannot transfer your TAO, and you can revoke access in one transaction. Your TAO stays in your own wallet, and Stakao never takes a cut of your rewards.
