Best Bittensor Subnets by Category
Published Oct 13, 2026 · Last verified: October 2026 · Stakao · 8 min read
Short answer
There is no single best Bittensor subnet. The best one for you fits what you want exposure to and passes your checks on demand, pool size and risk. This guide groups well-known subnets into four categories, shows how to judge them, and links to the Stakao strategies that follow the same themes. It does not rank subnets by expected performance.
The categories at a glance
| Category | What it covers | Examples | Stakao theme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compute | GPU, cloud and storage | Targon (SN4), Lium (SN51), Compute Horde (SN12), Hippius (SN75) | Compute |
| Inference and training | Running, training and feeding AI models, including data | DSperse (SN2), IOTA (SN9), Gradients (SN56), Data Universe (SN13) | Inference / Training |
| Agents | AI agents and coding tools | Ridges (SN62), Gittensor (SN74), ORO (SN15) | Agents |
| Market intelligence | Forecasting and trading | Numinous (SN6), Synth (SN50), Vanta (SN8), Almanac (SN41) | Market Intelligence |
| By size | The largest subnets by market cap | Changes with the market | Top 10, Top 20 |
Names and descriptions are what each subnet publishes, read on 13 October 2026. Naming a subnet is not a recommendation.
What “best” means for a subnet
A subnet can be early, large, liquid, well run or popular, and those are different things. Nobody can know which subnet will perform best, so we do not rank them by expected performance. We group them by what they sell and show how to judge each one.
Subnets change. New ones launch, weak ones are removed, and a removed subnet’s number can be reused by a new one (Bittensor docs). For the live list, use the Taostats subnet list. For the basics of how subnet tokens work, read our guide to Bittensor alpha tokens.
Compute subnets
Compute subnets sell raw capacity: GPU time, virtual machines, cloud services and storage. Their value rests on whether people and other subnets actually rent that capacity. Examples, as each describes itself:
- Targon (SN4): an incentivized compute marketplace
- Lium (SN51): GPU compute you can rent
- Compute Horde (SN12): trusted compute for Bittensor validators
- Hippius (SN75): cloud storage, virtual machines and apps
Check whether anyone outside the network pays for the capacity, or whether the subnet lives on emissions alone. Stakao’s Compute strategy follows this theme.
Inference and training subnets
These subnets run, train and feed AI models. Inference subnets answer requests, training subnets build or fine-tune models, and data subnets collect the material models learn from. Examples:
- DSperse (SN2): verifiable, distributed inference
- IOTA (SN9): distributed AI training
- Gradients (SN56): model training and AutoML
- Data Universe (SN13): scraping social media data
Check whether the subnet can show that its output is useful and verifiable. Stakao’s Inference / Training strategy follows this theme.
Agent subnets
Agent subnets reward autonomous software that does real work, such as writing code or running commerce tasks. Examples:
- Ridges (SN62): software engineering agents
- Gittensor (SN74): autonomous software development
- ORO (SN15): AI commerce agents
Check how the work is scored and whether the scoring can be gamed. Stakao’s Agents strategy follows this theme.
Market intelligence subnets
These subnets produce forecasts, trading signals or market research. Examples:
- Numinous (SN6): a forecasting protocol
- Synth (SN50): predictive intelligence for financial markets
- Vanta (SN8): a decentralized trading engine
- Almanac (SN41): prediction market research
Check whether there is an honest, public way to judge the forecasts over time. Stakao’s Market Intelligence strategy follows this theme.
Top subnets by size
If you would rather follow the market than a theme, rank subnets by market cap. Stakao’s Top 10 and Top 20 strategies do that: the rule suggests the largest subnets, and the risk engine sizes and protects each position. Compare pool depth too, because market cap alone does not tell you how far a trade will move the price.
How to evaluate a subnet
Whatever the category, run the same checks before you stake:
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Demand | Who pays for the subnet’s output, apart from emissions |
| Emissions | Its share of new TAO, and whether that share is rising or falling |
| Pool depth | The TAO in the pool compared with your order size |
| Team and code | A public repository, a named team and a record of updates |
| Age | New subnets are protected from removal for a few months, so a short record says little |
| Validators | Their take and their track record |
| Price history | How the token has moved against TAO, including the drops |
Then spread your entries and decide your exit first. Our guide to investing in Bittensor subnets walks through each step.
Where Stakao fits
Stakao’s four theme strategies follow the categories above, and Top 10 and Top 20 follow size. They are Premium strategies (€19 per month or €168 per year, with a 7-day free trial). The AI agent, the quant score or the basket rule only suggests subnets. It cannot buy, sell or touch your keys. A rules-based risk engine decides what to buy, how much and when to sell. The same rules apply to every wallet. Every position gets a stop-loss and a profit lock, and TAO that is not in a position stays on Root.
If you want to choose the subnets yourself, Smart DCA and Auto Validators are free. Stakao works through a staking-only permission that cannot transfer your TAO and that you can revoke at any time, and it never takes a cut of your rewards. Activating a strategy needs 2 TAO in the wallet, with at least 0.1 TAO free for fees. A stop-loss limits losses but cannot remove them: in a thin market, a sale can fill below the stop price. Smart DCA and Auto Validators do not use the risk engine. See how it works, compare all strategies or check the pricing.
This guide is education, not investment advice. Subnet tokens carry risk, including losing part or all of what you put in. Read how staking works in our guide to staking TAO and compare the best TAO staking platforms.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best Bittensor subnets?
There is no single best subnet. The best fit depends on the theme you want exposure to and on checks such as demand, emissions, pool size and team. This guide groups well-known subnets into compute, inference and training, agents and market intelligence.
How many Bittensor subnets are there?
More than 100, and the number changes as subnets are added and removed. The network has a subnet limit, and when it is reached a new registration replaces the unprotected subnet with the lowest moving-average token price. Use the Taostats subnet list for the live count.
Which are the top Bittensor subnets?
It depends on the measure. Market cap, emissions, pool size and real usage give different lists, and all of them change every day. Stakao’s Top 10 and Top 20 strategies follow market cap, and the Taostats subnet list shows the live picture.
How do I choose a Bittensor subnet?
Start with the theme, then check who pays for the subnet’s output, its share of emissions and the trend, the size of its pool against your order, the team and code, and its age. Spread your entries and decide your exit before you buy.
Can I invest in Bittensor subnets automatically?
Yes. Stakao’s Smart DCA enters the subnets you choose on a schedule, and the Premium theme strategies suggest subnets in each category while a risk engine protects every position. Neither removes market risk.
