How to Buy TAO (Bittensor) in 2026
Published Updated Last verified: October 20269 min read
Short answer
To buy TAO, open an account on an exchange that lists it, such as Kraken or Coinbase, and buy TAO. Then withdraw it to a Bittensor wallet that you control: choose the Bittensor network, paste an address that starts with 5 and send a small test first. TAO in a wallet earns no staking rewards until you stake it, by hand or with Stakao.
Where to buy TAO
TAO is the token of Bittensor, a network where AI work is organised into subnets. It trades on exchanges, and the Talisman extension can also sell it to you inside the wallet. We checked Kraken, Coinbase and Talisman for this guide, on their own pages, on 14 October 2026. Other exchanges may list TAO too. Before you use one, check that it lists TAO, serves your country and lets you withdraw TAO on the Bittensor network.
| Where | How you get TAO | Who holds it first | Stake it there? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Create an account and buy TAO, then stake it there or withdraw it. | Kraken, until you withdraw | Yes, with Kraken holding it |
| Coinbase | Trade TAO. Talisman’s guide says you can transfer TAO from a Coinbase account to the wallet. | Coinbase, until you withdraw | No: TAO staking is not supported |
| Talisman: Buy/Sell | In the extension, buy TAO by card or bank transfer, depending on your region, through Coinbase OnRamp. Only where Coinbase is supported. | You, from the start | Yes, in the wallet |
| Talisman: Swap | In the extension, swap another crypto, such as USDC or ETH, for TAO. | You, from the start | Yes, in the wallet |
An exchange is the usual place to start, and you then withdraw to your own wallet. A wallet that sells TAO skips the withdrawal, because the TAO arrives in the wallet you control. Payment methods, availability and fees depend on your country.
Step 1: Create a wallet you control
Install a Bittensor wallet such as Talisman, SubWallet or Nova Wallet from its own website, create a wallet and write the recovery phrase on paper. Then copy your Bittensor address, which starts with 5.
A wallet you control means you hold the recovery phrase, and nobody else can move your TAO. It also means nobody can recover the phrase for you: Bittensor’s docs say that no one, the Rao Foundation included, can reverse a theft or recover lost keys (Bittensor docs).
- Pick a wallet. Bittensor’s wallet list names Talisman, SubWallet and Nova Wallet, among others. Our wallet guide compares them.
- Protect the phrase. Write it on paper, keep it offline and never type it into a website, chat or email. Nobody legitimate asks for it, and Stakao never needs it.
- Copy your address. Open the receive screen and choose TAO on the Bittensor network. Nova and SubWallet explain where to find it (Nova guide, SubWallet guide).
On a phone? Nova Wallet and SubWallet both have iOS and Android apps, and our guide to staking TAO on your phone covers them. You can also create a Stakao account on your phone, then connect Nova Wallet or SubWallet, or a wallet on a computer later.
Step 2: Buy TAO and know the fees
Open an account on an exchange that lists TAO, such as Kraken or Coinbase, add funds and buy TAO. Compare the fees before you confirm, and start with an amount you can afford to see move in price.
Funding limits depend on your country and your verification level, as Kraken’s Bittensor page says, so you may need to verify your identity before you can buy or withdraw. Check the exchange’s own pages for the payment methods and fees that apply to you.
Fees come in three places: the exchange’s fee for the purchase, its fee to withdraw TAO, and a Bittensor network fee each time you send or stake TAO from your wallet. Kraken’s fee schedule says its deposit and withdrawal fees depend on the method and the currency, and tells you to check the deposit or withdrawal page of your account. Compare the total on the confirmation screen, not only the headline price.
Step 3: Withdraw TAO to your wallet
On the exchange’s withdrawal screen for TAO, paste your Bittensor address and choose the Bittensor network. Send a small test first, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest.
Check these five things before you confirm. A transfer cannot be undone.
- Network. Choose Bittensor. A TAO token on another network is a different asset, and a Bittensor wallet cannot receive it.
- Address. A Bittensor address starts with 5. If yours starts with 0x, stop. In Nova Wallet, if the exchange rejects the address, open View Address Formats on the Receive screen and copy the Legacy address (Nova docs).
- Account. Send to your wallet’s main address, the coldkey, and never to a hotkey: Bittensor’s docs say a transfer to a hotkey can strand the funds.
- Every character. Address poisoning plants a lookalike of an address you used in your transaction history. Copy the address from your wallet, not from your history, and compare all of it with what the exchange shows.
- A test first. You pay the withdrawal fee twice. That is the price of knowing that the address, the network and the wallet all work before the full amount moves.
Step 4: Check that it arrived
Open your wallet to see the balance, or look up your address on a block explorer such as taostats.io. Keep a little TAO free for network fees.
Bittensor adds a block about every 12 seconds, so the transfer itself is quick, but the exchange can take longer to release it. If your balance has not changed, check the withdrawal record on the exchange and your address on Taostats. Do not send again until you know where the first transfer went.
Your TAO is now in your wallet, and only you can move it. It earns no staking rewards until you stake it.
Step 5: Put your TAO to work
TAO in a wallet earns no staking rewards until you stake it. Stake it from your wallet, by hand or with Stakao, or use an exchange’s staking if you prefer to leave your TAO there.
- By hand, from your wallet. Choose Root or a subnet, choose a validator and confirm. Our guide to staking TAO has the steps, and the rewards guide has dated reward rates.
- With Stakao. Stakao does those steps from your wallet, behind a staking-only permission that you can revoke at any time. The free plan has Auto Validators and Smart DCA. Premium adds AI-picked subnets and a risk engine on every position, with a 7-day free trial. See how it works and pricing.
- On an exchange. Kraken stakes TAO inside your account and holds it for you. Coinbase says TAO staking is not supported. Best TAO staking platforms compares every route.
Staking carries risk: rewards vary and subnet token prices can fall. This guide is information, not investment advice.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy TAO?
Kraken and Coinbase both list TAO, and we checked both for this guide. Other exchanges may list it too: check that yours lists TAO, serves your country and lets you withdraw TAO on the Bittensor network. The Talisman extension can also sell you TAO inside the wallet through Coinbase OnRamp, in regions Coinbase supports.
Can I buy TAO with a credit card?
Talisman’s guide says its in-wallet purchase takes a credit card or a bank transfer, depending on your region, through Coinbase OnRamp. On an exchange, the payment methods depend on the exchange and your country, so check its funding page before you start.
How do I withdraw TAO from an exchange to my wallet?
Open the exchange’s withdrawal screen for TAO, paste your Bittensor address, which starts with 5, and choose the Bittensor network if it asks. Send a small test first. Transfers cannot be undone, so read the whole address before you confirm.
Which network should I choose to withdraw TAO?
The Bittensor network, to an address that starts with 5. A TAO token on another network is a different asset, and an Ethereum-style address that starts with 0x does not work with a Bittensor wallet. If an option is unclear, stop and check before you send.
How much TAO do I need to start staking?
The Bittensor chain asks for 0.002 TAO per stake operation by default. Stakao needs at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free (not staked) for the first activation. Whatever you choose, keep a little TAO free for network fees.
Is it safe to leave TAO on an exchange?
The risk is different. On an exchange, the exchange holds your keys, so a freeze, a withdrawal limit or a failure would affect you. In your own wallet you hold the keys, and you are responsible for your recovery phrase, because nobody can recover it for you. TAO can also fall in price wherever you keep it.
Can I buy and stake TAO on my phone?
Yes. Kraken says its mobile app can manage Bittensor holdings, and Nova Wallet and SubWallet both have iOS and Android apps, so you can create the wallet and copy your Bittensor address on your phone, then withdraw as in step 3. You can also create a Stakao account on your phone and connect Nova Wallet or SubWallet, or connect a wallet later from a computer.
