Automated TAO Staking: How It Works

Published Updated Last verified: October 20269 min read

Short answer

Automated TAO staking means software does the repeating work for you: choosing validators, entering subnets over time and watching prices. It saves effort and applies rules the same way every time, but it cannot remove price risk or promise returns. The choice that matters most is custody. An exchange holds your TAO, while Stakao works from your own wallet through a staking-only permission that cannot transfer your TAO and that you can revoke at any time.

What manual TAO staking asks of you

Staking TAO by hand is simple the first time and tiring the tenth. Each stake asks for the same decisions, and the market keeps moving after you confirm.

  • Where. On Root your stake stays in TAO. On a subnet your TAO is swapped into that subnet’s token, and your stake follows its price.
  • Which validator. A validator keeps a share of the rewards, called its take. The chain default is 18%, and a validator can set a lower take at any time.
  • Which subnets. Subnet tokens move against TAO all day, so following several means watching several prices.
  • Claiming. On Root, rewards build up until you claim them, for example on Taostats’ Root Claim page, and each claim pays a network fee.
  • Moving stake. Bittensor has no unbonding period, so you can unstake at any time (Bittensor docs). Someone still has to notice that a subnet weakened.

None of this is hard. The cost is that it repeats, and that a missed step costs something. Our guide to staking TAO covers the steps. The rest of this page covers what you can hand to software.

What automation can and cannot do

Bittensor staking automation handles repetition well. It cannot see the future.

Software can:

  • Choose validators and keep your stake with them.
  • Spread your entries over time instead of buying all at once.
  • Watch positions around the clock and sell by rule when a stop is hit (Stakao Premium).

Software cannot:

  • Know which subnet token will rise, or remove price risk.
  • Promise a reward rate. Rewards vary.
  • Fix the price you sell at.

Software is only as good as its rules, so read them before you hand over the work.

Ways to automate TAO staking, compared

Here are four routes. They differ most on who holds your TAO. The figures come from each service’s own pages, as of October 2026.

RouteWho holds your TAOWhat it automatesWhat it costs
Exchange staking (Kraken)KrakenKraken stakes for you. Its TAO page shows one flexible product, with no choice of subnet or validator.Up to about 5% to 7% a year by region, before Kraken’s commission
Index products (Mentat Minds)You, through a proxyMarket-cap indexes such as Mentat 5 and Mentat 15, and custom indexes.A standard 9% staking fee on the rewards you earn. Minimum: 0.5 TAO for One-Click Strategies.
StakaoYou, through a staking-only permissionFree: validators (Auto Validators) and gradual entries (Smart DCA). Premium: AI-picked or rule-picked subnets, with a risk engine on each position.Free plan. Premium €19 per month or €168 per year. No cut of rewards.
Your own script (btcli)YouWhatever you write around btcli, the official command line.Your time, the network fee and the validator take

Exchange staking is the simplest route if you accept custody. The other three keep your TAO in your wallet. For a fuller comparison, read best TAO staking platforms, Stakao vs Mentat Minds and Stakao vs Kraken.

Custody: who can move your TAO?

On an exchange, the exchange holds your keys, so a freeze, a withdrawal limit or a failure would affect you. A non-custodial service works differently. You keep your keys and sign a proxy: a limited permission, recorded on the chain, that lets another key act for your account. Bittensor’s proxy guide lists the types:

  • Staking. Adds, removes and moves stake. A leaked Staking proxy “can shuffle your stake; it cannot transfer a single TAO out.”
  • Any. Does everything, transfers included. The guide says leaking one is “exactly as bad as leaking the coldkey”, so never grant it to a bot.

You can remove a proxy at any time. Removal takes effect at once, and the reserved deposit comes back. Even a staking-only permission lets a service stake and unstake for you, so you still trust its rules with your trades: read what it does before you sign. Check how it charges too. A share of rewards grows when you earn more, and a flat price does not.

How Stakao automates TAO staking from your wallet

With Stakao you stop comparing validators and signing every transaction. Your TAO stays in your wallet, behind a staking-only permission that you can revoke at any time, and the free plan costs nothing.

  1. Connect your wallet. Talisman, SubWallet, Nova Wallet or Polkadot.js. Your keys never leave it.
  2. Choose a strategy. The free plan has Auto Validators, where you pick the subnets and Stakao picks the validators, and Smart DCA, which enters daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly. Premium adds AI Agent, Quant Core, market-cap baskets and themes.
  3. Sign one staking-only permission. Stakao can stake and unstake for you but can never transfer your TAO.

On Premium, the AI agent, the quant score or the basket rule only suggests subnets. A rules-based risk engine decides what to buy, how much and when to sell. The same rules apply to every wallet. Each position is sized so that about 1% of your wallet is at risk. Every position gets a stop-loss that adapts to the subnet’s volatility and only ever moves up. TAO that is not in a position stays on Root, where it keeps earning staking rewards. Stakao also collects your Root staking rewards through the same permission, so you do not claim them by hand. Our guides to the AI agent, Quant Core and Smart DCA go deeper.

Before you start, you need at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free (not staked) for the first activation. The chain reserves a 0.126 TAO deposit while the permission exists, and it returns when you remove the permission. Premium is €19 per month or €168 per year, with a 7-day free trial, and Stakao never takes a cut of your rewards.

On a phone, create your account there and connect Nova Wallet or SubWallet, or connect a wallet later from a computer. See how it works, pricing and the strategies.

The risks of automated staking

  • Prices. Rewards vary, and subnet tokens can fall against TAO. Automation changes who does the work, not the market.
  • Protection has limits. A stop-loss limits losses but cannot remove them: in a thin market, a sale can fill below the stop price. Auto Validators and Smart DCA do not use the risk engine, so neither has a stop-loss.
  • The service. A staking-only permission cannot move your TAO out, but the service can still stake and unstake with it. Use a service that explains its rules.
  • Impostors. No staking service needs your recovery phrase or an Any permission. Never share either with a bot, or with anyone who writes to offer support.

Frequently asked questions

What is automated TAO staking?

Automated TAO staking, also called auto staking, is software that does the repeating steps of staking for you: choosing validators, entering subnets over time and, on some services, watching prices and selling by rule. You still own the stake and the risk. What changes is who does the work, and who holds your TAO while it happens.

Is there a TAO staking bot?

Yes. Stakao and Mentat Minds stake for you through a proxy in your wallet, and exchange staking does it inside the exchange. You can also write your own bot around Bittensor’s command line. Bittensor’s proxy guide advises giving a script the narrowest proxy that covers its job and keeping your coldkey off the machine that runs it. Never give a bot your recovery phrase.

Does automated staking earn more than staking by hand?

Not by itself. What you earn depends on where you stake (Root or a subnet), on the validator’s take and, on a subnet, on the token’s price. Automation does the steps without gaps and, on Stakao Premium, adds position sizing and a stop-loss that are designed to limit losses. It cannot raise the reward rate or promise a return.

Is automated TAO staking non-custodial?

It depends on the service. On an exchange, the exchange holds your TAO. Stakao and Mentat Minds both work through a Bittensor proxy set up in your wallet. With Stakao you sign a staking-only permission: Stakao can stake and unstake for you but can never transfer your TAO, and you can revoke it at any time.

How much does automated TAO staking cost?

It depends on the model, as of October 2026. Kraken shows its rate before commission. Mentat Minds charges a standard 9% staking fee on the rewards you earn. The Stakao free plan costs nothing, and Premium costs €19 per month or €168 per year, with a 7-day free trial. Stakao never takes a cut of your rewards.

How do I stop automated staking?

On Stakao, deactivate the strategy: it unstakes the positions, then removes the permission. You can also revoke the permission in your wallet at any time. Bittensor’s docs say removal takes effect immediately and the deposit comes back. Without the permission, Stakao can no longer act on your positions, including a stop-loss.

What do I need to start with Stakao?

You need a Bittensor wallet (Talisman, SubWallet, Nova Wallet or Polkadot.js) and at least 2 TAO in your wallet, with about 0.15 TAO free (not staked) for the first activation. The chain reserves a 0.126 TAO deposit while the permission exists, and it returns when you remove the permission. On a phone, you can create your account there and connect Nova Wallet or SubWallet, or connect a wallet later from a computer.
